Company Assumes All Responsibility for Resorts’ Broadband Networks, Including Equipment and Installation Cost

CHICAGO, Ill., September 14, 2017 – Cobalt Holdings, Inc., a Managed Services Broadband Network operator providing fiber-optic Carrier Ethernet, wireless and Wi-Fi services to the hospitality industry and mobile network operators in Mexico’s Riviera Maya, today announced the appointment of Michael J. Mahoney as its Chief Technology Officer.

Mr. Mahoney has a history of successful leadership in start-up and entrepreneurial companies. He has deep experience in cross-border networks, telecommunications, and IT systems, having served as EVP Operations and Technology, President, and CEO of international carrier Viatel. While at Viatel he supervised the design and construction of the 8,700-km Circe fiber-optic network, delivered on time and under budget (US$1.6 billion).

“I am very excited to help build Cobalt’s Carrier Ethernet network in a region that has limited broadband connectivity,” Mahoney said. “In particular, we are providing ‘guaranteed bandwidth’ to the area’s more than 500 hotels and resorts with more than 200,000 rooms, as well as offering fronthaul and backhaul connectivity to mobile network operators. We are the only provider that will design, build, maintain and, most importantly, finance a state-of-the-art high-speed Internet access service for hotels and resorts – in exchange for a small per-room per-day charge.”

Mahoney was responsible for Viatel’s transformation from a US$73 million revenue telecom reseller to a US$750 million revenue trans-Atlantic pan-European facility-based carrier. Expanded service offerings included high-speed Internet access, managed bandwidth, off-site data storage hosting, VPNs and highly secure point-to-point Ethernet networks.

“I have worked with Mike at Viatel. He has deep technical acumen, with broad expertise in operations, finance, and business development, He has proven ability to quickly analyze key business drivers and develop strategies to grow revenue and margins,” said Larry Malone, President of Cobalt. “Our objective is to bring world-class Managed Broadband Services to the Riviera Maya region, including completing a dedicated fiber-optic network, with international connectivity to the rest of the world.”
